The lungs are situated in the rib cage on either side of the heart, they allow the absorbtion oxygen from inhaled breath into the blood.
The first successful lung transplant was performed at Stanford by Dr. Bruce Reitz in 1981.
There are around 80 lung transplants performed each year across Australia.
The one year survival rate is about 89%.
